This is one of my favorite Mediterranean sauces and dips- if you have never tried it, I highly suggest it! You get the creaminess from the yogurt, with the fresh flavors of the cucumber, lemon, and mint- with a punch of herbs and salt from the Za'atar (Mediterranean spice mix). I decided to try to recreate this, as I always order this from one of my favorite restaurants- Pita Jungle, and my whole family loves it. I have got to say- it worked! This recipe is right on, and very easy to make!
2 cups plain Greek yogurt- I use non-fat
1/2 Cucumber-peeled, and cut off the majority of the seeds, and dice
1 clove of minced garlic
1 tsp minced fresh mint
Lemon Zest of 1/2 lemon
Lemon Juice from 1/2 lemon
1/2 teaspoon Za'atar
Salt to taste
Mix everything in a bowl and chill for at least 30 minutes to really let all the flavors develop.
Serve as a dip with pita bread, chips, crackers or fresh veggies. Tzatziki is an amazing sauce on sandwiches and pitas, or your favorite grilled protein too. I could eat this on anything ;).
Also, if you aren't familiar with Za'atar it is a middle eastern spice blend - I found it on Amazon, but sure you can likely find it at other stores.
